Migraine Headaches

It is hard to pass a row of magazines at the grocery store check out without seeing perhaps a dozen-or-so Natural Headache Remedies or some other Miraculous New Way to Be Headache Free. Sometimes there are two or three women's magazines and a health book or two that advertise some article about migraines and other headaches.

All this is no surprise when we consider how many people are struck by headaches each day. Approximately 157 million workdays are lost each year due to headaches. According to the American Council for Headache Education, 95% of women and 90% of men reported having had at least one incapacitating headache in the surveyed year.

One type of headache which afflicts many is the migraine. Headaches are called migraines when the symptoms include severe pain on one side of the head that lasts anywhere from hours to days and can include nausea and sensitivity to light. Sometimes before getting a migraine, a person has vision problems. Almost 20% of all women report experiencing migraines and most say that these headaches have a highly negative impact on their families.

A lot of airtime on TV has been devoted to new migraine medications but along with this news comes the warning of "rebound headaches". This is a migraine that improves for a brief time but then returns as painful, or more severe and is the result of too much or too frequent medication. The only response when someone suffers a rebound headache is to quit the medication.

So, the pain killer medications available may not be the answer, and they are, at best, temporary measures. Medications also have side effects including some that are more severe than the original headache. Migraines are believed to be caused by pressure placed on nerve endings in the head. This is a reaction to an imbalance of chemicals in the brain.

Chiropractors do take care of imbalances in the body. Since the brain controls the entire body's function by communicating with the body through the nervous system, any interference to this communication effects the body. IF any of the bones of the spine, which protect the delicate nerves, get misaligned and locked out of place, there is a negative effect on the body's systems. Muscles, which are attached to the spinal bones, overreact and become spastic and irritated because the misaligned spinal bones cause the nerves to stretch and become irritated and inflamed. Pain, specifically headache-pain in this instance, can easily result from the damage to delicate tissues from spinal imbalances.

For many years, migraine sufferers have gotten not only relief, but also long term healthy benefits from chiropractic care.

Chiropractors work to realign misaligned spinal bones in proper place, nerves are no longer stressed to damage, muscles regain their healthy tone, and the tissues of the body can restore to painless normalcy. Chiropractic works and the only thing rebounding is YOU.
